GIRLS’ ASSISTANT DEAN

Holbrook Indian School (HIS) is seeking an assistant girls' dean, effective December 22, 2023. This is a 12-month hourly paid position and is similar to task force volunteer positions at other schools. Duties will include helping the head dean with dorm functions, supervising students on commons and in the cafeteria, helping in a classroom as an aide for an hour and a half from Monday through Thursday, and helping during the summer program. The structure in each dorm includes a Head Dean, Associate Dean, and Assistant Dean.

HIS is an accredited first- through 12th-grade boarding school operated directly by the Pacific Union Conference. As such, faculty and staff members receive remuneration and benefits according to the policies employed by all schools in the Pacific Union. As in many other SDA boarding schools, employees live in on-campus housing. The assistant dean lives in an apartment in the dorm. The average student population at HIS is 72 students, split evenly between 1-8th and 9-12th grades, with an additional 10-12 students at our one-teacher school in Chinle, Arizona.

Experience:
Must be 21 years old or older to meet our insurance requirements for transporting students. Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in the education, counseling, or social work fields.

INDUSTRIAL/VOCATIONAL ARTS TEACHER

Holbrook Indian School (HIS) is seeking to hire an Industrial/Vocational Arts Teacher effective July 1, 2024. This is a 12-month salaried position. Duties include teaching welding, auto mechanics, woodworking, and construction (these two are not taught at the same time) and maintaining the school vehicle fleet. HIS seeks to implement student certification programs in welding, auto mechanics, woodworking, and construction. This position is open until filled.

HIS is an accredited first- through 12th-grade boarding school operated directly by the Pacific Union Conference. As such, faculty and staff members receive remuneration and benefits according to the policies employed by all schools in the Pacific Union. As in many other SDA boarding schools, employees live in on-campus housing. The current population at HIS is approximately 65 students, split evenly between first- through eighth-grade and ninth- through 12th-grade, with an additional 10-15 students at our one-teacher school in Chinle, Arizona.

Required Experience:
Preference will be given to candidates who have taught industrial arts at the academy level, have a teaching certificate, and have a CDL with passenger endorsement or are willing to get one. Proficiency in welding, auto mechanics, woodworking, construction, and vehicle maintenance, is required.

ELEMENTARY TEACHER

Description:

Holbrook Indian School (HIS) is seeking to hire an elementary teacher effective July 1, 2024. This is a full time salaried, 10-month position.  The maximum number of students in this classroom is 20. Classes include Math and ELA groups, 7/8th Social Studies, and 5/6th Social Studies and Bible. Candidates would have a strong desire to serve young people, particularly the Native American population of the United States, and enthusiasm for guiding students to Jesus through strong academics. HIS groups students in heterogenous groups in 1-12th grade for Language Arts and Math.  We use the Accelerated Reading program for reading, and Aleks for Math.  There is a separate PE teacher and library services support. Students also attend gardening classes. We have two clinical counselors who offer mental health support. This position includes being the eighth-grade class sponsor. As with all boarding schools, student supervision duties are part of the job description, including weekend supervision.  Preference will be given to candidates who are willing to make a long-term commitment to our students and who feel a calling to a job that requires complete dedication, and have, or are willing to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement. This position is open until filled.

HOUSE DEANS

Summary of Job: Holbrook Indian School is looking for a volunteer married couple with mental health experience for the following roles in an off-campus special education housing capacity.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. A married couple serving as house parents, preferably with social work, special education, and/or educational psychology background.

  2.  This is on a volunteer basis but could be salaried depending on candidates’ needs.

    • As volunteers, the deans will receive funds to cover living expenses. Meals and utilities will be covered.

  3. This is a 12-month post. Whenever students are not at the Eagle’s nest, house deans will:

    • Help at the school 

    • Work on plans and needs at the Eagle’s Nest

    • Take time off

  4. When students are at the Eagle’s Nest, deans are responsible 24 hours a day.

  5. There may be times when students stay there during home leaves and vacations when dorms are closed if going home is not safe for them. Students would return to school as soon as school resumes.

  6. An expectation is that the female house parent would use the women’s restroom and the male house parent would use the men's restroom when students are residing in the house.

  7. The need for a separate bathroom for house parents will be monitored and evaluated throughout the trial period.
