KOBE'S STORY

“I love to exercise,” said former Holbrook Indian School (HIS) student Kobe, “and one of my favorite classes was Conditioning Class.”  With Kobe, it’s not just hyperbole.

During one summer, he not only trained as a long-distance runner, but he also attended a series of races sponsored by the Navajo Nation called “Just Move It.” He can easily run five-minute miles and has participated in a handful of half-marathons as well as numerous 5K and 10K races.

Kobe came to HIS as a third-grader. “It was easy to come here,” he said, “because I hated my old school. My mom cried over me, though.” Although he missed his mom, he saw a difference in his life when he was at school. “School kept me on track and in control,” Kobe said. “When I was here, it was easier to do the right thing.”

Mr. Hubbard taught Kobe's favorite class and his most difficult class: Bible and math. “I loved Bible class because I gained a lot of wisdom from reading and memorizing scripture.” Math class, on the other hand, challenged him because he was several years behind academically. Kobe was eventually able to join the Accelerated Math program at the school.
